The Unifying language of BPMN 2.0
BPMN 2.0 is the latest version of this BPMN standard, developed by the Object Management Group (OMG®) with the aim of producing a unified modeling language that is understandable to all business users. It bridges the gap between business process design and implementation. This simplifies the user task by setting out a clear software diagram.
As it is optimized for modern process modeling, BPMN 2.0 has become one of the most popular modeling languages. With SAP Signavio Process Manager you enjoy the benefits of BPMN 2.0 and a professional modeling environment. Be this for beginners, the occasional modelers, or even for experts. In fact, Signavio fully supports all modeling languages–from Business Process Model & Notation BPMN 2.0, to event-driven process chain (EPC) and ArchiMate® 2.1, to Decision Model & Notation (DMN 1.1).
Modeling with BPMN 2.0
BPMN 2.0 models are constructed from graphical elements representing different parts of the process. The core elements consist of activities, events, and gateways that are linked with arrows depicting the sequence flow. The business process result is similar in technique to flowcharting and UML.
These elements are modeled on swimlanes and artifacts. They represent the roles and responsibilities in the process, with the pool as an organizational unit, and the lanes as departments or individuals. Signavio users benefit from, amongst other things, simple modeling using Drag & Drop, and the automatic positioning assistance for modeling elements. With Signavio’s comprehensive modeling software, you can also create processes multilingually, maintain process attributes, and link processes hierarchically. Every model, diagram, and artifact are saved in a central process repository.
Take a look at our BPMN Introductory Guide for details on the core elements and their purpose.
Why BPMN 2.0?
Quite simply, for its simplicity! The clear representation of organizational structures and responsibilities in pools and swimming lanes makes BPMN 2.0 easy to understand. It not only offers diverse possibilities for modeling experts but it is also the perfect tool for those who only model occasionally, or even for beginners. Events, activities and gateway symbols are laid out in logical categories, so the functions are easy to learn. (See our upcoming BPMN Trainings). Also, in practice, BPMN 2.0 should be looked at from the view of Business Process Management or BPM. Therefore, both technical and business users require a language which is intuitive enough for non-technical users, yet rich enough to represent complex process semantics.
Don't forget the importance of teamwork! As with every task and process, collaboration is the key to successful documentation and execution of projects. Business process modeling often cannot be garnered in a central interface, but BPMN 2.0 is the ideal opportunity to actively involve the entire modeling team. Business models can also be transported to execution languages such as BPEL.
